If you decide to drive on the Merritt Parkway in Connecticut, bring yourself an extra fuel filter.
Don't caravan with other German sports coupes. The tow truck driver will just ask "which one."

Timing belt, water pump, balance shafts, bearings and whatnot.

924 doesn't have a balance shaft :)
This is a non interference engine, so if your T-belt goes you'll be fine and it will merely be an inconvenience, so buy a belt and the roller!

Ha, both, realistically.
Also, sunscreen and toilet paper.
And don't expect all of your friends to stop, because some of them will just laugh as they drive past.

Alright, so I own a 1982 924, and a 1987 944. This car is a 2.0 non-inteference engine so if the T-belt goes it will be fine but you really should replace it asap. Luckily you bought a car with 50/50 weight distribution. You also appear to have a rare Zender rear spoiler for the 924 which attaches to the body and sort of makes it look like the later 944's hatches.
With the 77 you're gonna need to look out for rust, because unfortunately your car isn't galvanized.
What made you buy the car?
One of the biggest annoyances with this car, 924's are significantly simpler than their later siblings the 944, is it's CIS (or Bosch K-Jetronic) fuel injection. It is mechanical, so there is no electricity or EFI at all. When this goes wrong, prepare to have a bad day because it's a pain in the ass to troubleshoot and repair. You need a CIS pressure tester to work on the CIS system effectively.
Also, carry a spare fuel pump relay with you at all times, and if not, carry a spaded jumper cable to jump the connections to the fuel pump.
Apart from that, enjoy your car. What are your goals with it? Stock? Upgrades? I would flush all fluids and replace the vacuum lines as they tend to go with age.
Good luck!

I paid $2,400 at the Car Corral at the Auburn auction, so no.

I know nothing about them but I saw a bunch of them being sold for scrap.

You got the NA version. Good. That's one less surprisingly expensive thing that will break on you.

Mostly I wanted something fun, that was bigger than my Miata. I also like cars which don't try too hard to get attention.
Also, I checked underneath the car, in the fenders, under the hood, and in the little cubbies on the side of the trunk and didn't find any rust. The only rust I ccould find is the surface stuff around the windshield and the top.
Thanks for the tons of advice man! I need to put together a plan to get her road-worthy. Currently, the brake lights don't work, the brakes hardly work, the clutch has about 1/4" of travel before engaging, and it won't start after it gets hot. The pop-ups also don't pop-up, only one of the headlights works, and the aftermarket exhaust (which burbles and crackles in the most amazing way) has a huge leak.
But other than that, it just made a 180 mile trip without any major issues.
HFV has no HFV. But somehow has 2 motorcycles

Nice. Well a 924 will feel a bit slower than your Miata, but if you do up the suspension you can get it feeling just as nice.
Brake lights may be as simple as corroded bulbs/connections or as difficult as the brake light switch. Probably needs it's brakes bled + the drums re-adjusted. Clutch is cable operated, so you can adjust that. Hot start issues are generally related to something called the "fuel accumulator" which is a commonly broken part on these, mine leaks as well, but it can also be CIS issues.
That's amazing, I have never encountered one of these cars with broken pop up headlamps, that's one of the most reliable parts on these cars! I ran my 924 with a straight pipe for a good long time, and I know exactly the burble you are talking about. Super fun when you go off-throttle and it just burbles back at you.

It's beautiful!
Download the factory service manual and start tinkering. That's how I got to know my 944.

Many thanks. Do you have an email in case I have any other questions? The forums scare me. Every time I post on the Bimmerforum, it's 99% people complaining that the question has been asked before.
